Vanity Fair – William Makepeace Thackeray and Portrait of a Lady – Henry James.
Pretty similar and yet quite different these two books are. Reading these classics always leaves me with fascination about the women in those times. I should not have liked to be born as a woman then – which is rather harsh to say since they were so much cared for and all…but its undeniable that they were so completely under the thumbs of men as anyone could be. Detailed reviews might follow later. For now, I am just disappointed in the way heroines of both the novels – and both are women centric – end up. Rebecca Sharp and Isabel Archer meet the end which was perhaps what would be realistic then but it did not humor me.
